Daily Reading: Mark chapters 5 thru 8

Key Verses: Mark 7:14-15

Jesus is making a distinction between the internal and the external.  He is using the Pharisees strict adherence to rules to demonstrate the difference between religion and relationship.  Religion is often something that is put on and given to outward appearances.  While, relationship deals with the heart.  Man's actions are a manifestation of what is already in his heart.

"I will guarantee you that if you will buy the morning paper wherever you live and will read it through, you will find that this is what comes out of a man during the last 24 hours:

Evil thoughts

Adultries and fornications - unlawful sex relations

Murders (anger is also murder)

Thefts (loafing on the job is also stealing)

Covetousness - grasping and greediness for material things and positions

Wickedness - all the acts that are intended to hurt people

Deceit - the pretense that people put up

Lasciviousness - sensuality

Evil Eye - envy

Blasphemy - slander against God or man

Pride (God hates this above all else)

Foolishness - acts done without any respect of God or man

These all come out of the heart of man and that is why the Lord Jesus says, ' Ye must be born again.' " J. Vernon McGee

That is why it important to pray that the Lord will give you a clean heart and renew a right Spirit within you (Psalm 51:10).  "As water reflects a face, so a man's heart reflects the man (Proverbs 27:19). Our words give us away (James 1:26-27).

2 Chronicles 7:14: I used to put categories on sin. Since I did not engage in what I considered to be big sins, I never thought of myself as a person who had wicked ways. But when you look at all the things that Jesus listed as wicked, it is easy to see how you have to daily ask for God to cleanse your heart and renew your Spirit. Just driving along a Texas roadway can become a means of indulging in wicked ways (not letting someone merge onto the freeway, cutting someone off, racing with another car, tailgating, cussing at other motorists, etc.). Dealing with other people period can bring up alot of wicked ways. Lord, help.
