Daily Reading: Acts Chapter 25 thru Chapter 28

Key Verse: Acts 26:14

Most of the pain we experience on a daily basis is self inflicted pain.  We make many decisions that seem right but are a short cut to pain and suffering.  Paul (Saul), believing he was working for God was making life harder for himself.  Jesus told him he was "kicking against the goads."  An ox-goad was a sharp stick used to prod cattle.  To kick against it was to bring pain upon yourself.  The oxgoad was used to keep the cattle moving in the right direction free from harm and danger.  Pain would come when they went where they wanted to go.  Are you kicking against the goads even now?  Knowing that Jesus is steering you in the right direction but your desire is to go another way?  Whether we know it or not going your own way is persecuting the purpose of our Lord.  Have you ever thought of yourself as a persecutor of Christ?  May all of God's children stop kicking against God's direction and bringing pain upon ourselves -- life has it's own worries.

This week I was going from door to door on my street. Asking for donation to the church with the charity tickets. I had an opportunity to witness to a man and his wife about Jesus and I did not do it. I ask him would he like to come to our church. He told me he didn't go to church. My next question should have been. If you died today do you know weather you would go to heaven? I feel bad because I didn't press the issue of him not going to church. I didn't know weather he is saved or not. I think when I don't feel obligated to spread the gospel I’m persecuting the purpose of our Lord Jesus Christ. I think I was focusing on the natural instead of the spiritual. Trying to donate a ticket when I should have been sensitive to what the spirit was saying to me at that time. God help me not to persecute you by not being sensitive to your spirit. When the opportunity to witness to someone comes. Help me to response with a sense of obligation. In Jesus Name Amen

Saul saw "a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions". God may not show himself or his purpose to each of us in the very same way, but I pray that when he does show himself, he does so clearly and unambiguously. When we hear from him or clearly see his message, I pray that we respond first in our hearts and then with our actions toward obedience. There is nothing fun about "kicking against the goads"...or spinning wheels and going nowhere. In doing this, not only are we bringing pain on ourselves, but we persecute God and frustrate his purpose. Help us, Lord, to know your purpose for us collectively and individually and allow you to guide our steps in fulfilling it so that we do not go contrary to your will. In Jesus name, Amen.

We've been reading with Bonhoeffer how grace is not cheap. Taking our focus off of ourselves and putting it totally on Christ is not an easy task, especially in the beginning. Although, Jesus' words to Paul reminds us that going against or persecuting him is like kicking against a prick. It's not until we quit resisting Christ that we stop the conflict within and enjoy the peace that surpasses all understanding. I pray that we all continue to pay the cost of transforming our minds to that of Christ, so we can have peace as opposed to the internal pain of kick against the prick of our egos. In Jesus name, Amen.

I pray that God, through His divine power, strengthens me that I may not desire or wrestle with going my own way. I repent for the times when I have complained regarding the course God has set before me. I am exceedingly glad for God’s mercy that covered me at those moments when I did “kick against the goads” and persecuted Christ. I am grateful for God’s healing grace he bestowed upon me when I took short cuts that produced self-agony. I pray that I will remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit as he leads me according to God’s divine and perfect will for my life. In Jesus name….Amen!

Is that the source of my pain? I must admit that I have sometimes (and on occasion still do)moved in a carnal direction to satisfy my flesh rather than in the predestined direction that I know God had already laid out for me. What He intended didn't seem to fit MY plan. My, fallible, oops I didn't think about that, what have I gotten myself into plan. Too often I try to rationalize even the things of God to make them work with my goals. I pray that His spirit continues to rise up in me through my continued faithfulness to Him. I pray that His daily bread continues to strengthen my spirit that I may become the humble servant that he has called me to be.

Inflicting pain upon myself isn't something I care to admit to but I have done it so many times, in fact to many times to count. Because God's way isn't always easy, my flesh would prefer to take an easier route. I have found time and time again that the "easy route" just end up causing such a mess that I'm asking God to fix it anyway, when in fact I should have just followed the leading of the Holy Spirit. I pray that as I continue to read and study His word, be faithful, and apply it to my life that His voice will speak so clearly to my heart that following Him will just become second nature.
