Daily Reading: Matthew chapters 5-8

Key Verse: Matthew 6:33

What does seeking God's Kingdom first look like?

I believe it is a picture of freedom.  When you see a bird flying in the air, you see a picture of freedom.  Birds do not worry or fret about their next meal or where they will rest their head at night.  Jesus instructs us not to worry about what we are to eat or wear.  Worry is a form of bondage.  The more you have or the more you desire to obtain, the more you will worry.  A lot time is wasted worrying about tomorrow.  This is not to say that you should not plan, especially when you are planning according to God's will for your life.  You just should not worry.  When we worry we are placing the burden of provision on ourselves and not relying on God's provision.  If we devote ourselves to the accumulation of financial reserves, we miss the point of being created, which is to serve God.  God promises that if we put Him first in our lives then He will provide what we need for our future.   Make it a point in the next week to put God's kingdom first in your life (although you should always do this) and observe the freedom that comes along with putting Him first.

A couple of weeks ago, God dropped this word in my spirit and it became my devotional scripture for that week, but of course I still meditate on it. In my opinion, this one scripture answers so many questions that we often ask. Questions like, "how do I receive all that God has for me?"; "how do I please God?"; and "how can I experience spiritual growth?". By seeking God's kingdom first, all these things and much more will be added unto us! Isn't that wonderful news!

That is awsome news!
The truth will always set us free. I pray that everyone fully understands the true meaning of seeking the kingdom. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, "Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." That means even in the small things we should glorify God. There was a monk named Brother Lawrence who wrote a book in which he stated that even in his chores he attempted to glorify God. There are no little or big things with God. There is only in His will or outside His will.

Thank you for this reassuring word. I believe that God wants to live freely. I know that struggles are hard but only last a moment. I know that God a greater plan for each of our lives and that we should trust His plan. God bless you and keep you and may many of His choicest blessings be yours.

While I was in graduate school last winter, this scripture was given as a devotional for our class. We were to comment on the scripture and what it meant to us personally. During that time, our family was approaching a turning point in our lives. It was with the help of Matthew 6:33 that we were able to leave our jobs which had become bondage to our lives. When you have been enslaved to something for a long period of time, you don't necessarily realize that you are enslaved you simply view things as this is the way life is. You know that there is something missing. You realize that you are on an emotional rollercoaster and you feel in your gut that something is just not right. However, when you start to seek His kingdom first, the answer to your problem becomes apparent and sometimes you have to cut loose whatever is keeping you from living out the fullness of Christ. When we broke loose, freedom came immediately. Unless you've experienced true freedom, I cannot explain it to you. But I know for a fact that I will never again "be burdened by a yoke of slavery" (Gal.5:1).
