Daily Reading: Psalms 17 thru 20

Key Verses: Psalm 18:2-3

God's protection of His people is limitless and can take many forms.  David characterized God's care with five military symbols.  God is like

(1) a rock that can't be moved by any who would harm us. Man changes.  You have a friend today who will be your enemy tomorrow.  Unlike man, God is not moved by your faults, your weaknesses.  When you seek His protection, He promises to be there.

(2) a fortress or place of safety where the enemy can't follow.  In moments of desperation, you can find refuge in God.  You are never alone.

(3) a shield that comes between us and harm.  He seeks to stand before us not behind us.  When He enters the battle ahead of you, He can shield you from harm.

(4) a horn of  salvation, a symbol of might and power.  Who is like the Lord?  Nobody.  He is strong and mighty.

(5) a stronghold high above our enemies.  He created all things.  Time and eternity are in His hands.

If you need protection, look to God.

How much does God love us to go through such great lengths to protect His children?  Even when we in our limited knowledge do not fully understand, He still is faithful to what He will do.

With my own children, I love them so much that I can at times be overprotective. I am learning the delicate balance of protection and letting them grow into their independence. However, there is not a moment when they will ask for my protection where I will not run to their aid. It would take a cold heart to have your child cry out to you and you do not answer. God's love is enormous. In the world in which we live there is danger on every corner, I seek God's protection for me and my family daily. But I must admit, I was limited in the protection I sought. I was mainly concerned with protection from physical harm. But because of Psalm 18, I am extending my protection request. I am adding to my prayer: Lord, be my rock, be my fortress, be my shield, be my horn of salvation and be my stronghold. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I can only imagine the harm that would befall us if it were not for God's infinite protection, love, and grace. It never ceases to amaze me how He holds the universe in the palm of His hand, but still cares enough to pay attention to little ole me. I love Him so much for the love, safety, and refuge that He provides for all of His children and will continue to seek Him for that on a daily basis.

When I think about how much I ask God to protect my children and myself from dangers seen and unseen, I have to marvel at how He keeps His loving arm of protection around us. I know that He loves us all and He wants us to live in total prosperity, that's why He gives his angels charge over us. Thank you Lord for being our protector.

As I think back on my late teen years and early twenties I felt safest when I had my “protection” with me. The devil convinced me that I could protect myself. My friends and I had a saying, “It was better to be caught with (a gun) than without”. Since my citizenship has been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of light my protection lives in me. God is the only means of protection for all of His creation. He is a very present help in the time of need (Psalm 46:1). God is faithful and trustworthy. I will trust in God my Father until I’m with Him forever.

Crucified with Christ,
